Here we go again as we embark on the long journey that is the MLB regular season. Due to the longevity of the schedule and variety of times that the games are played, it's often difficult to keep up with your favorite team(s) when you're on the go. That's where the mobile world comes in, especially when the phones and devices we use get faster and better every day.
I've compiled a few apps for all of the baseball fans out there that will help them keep up with news, scores, schedules, states and much more, for their team and around the MLB. A few of the following apps are very similar in function; they provide scores, schedules, news and so forth. You really need to find the app the works best for you and update the fastest for your device. Here we go:
MLB At Bat 2011
If you?re a die-hard baseball fan, this app is definitely for you. With MLB At Bat 2011, you can listen to the home or away broadcast from every MLB club. You can also access your MLB.tv subscription to stream games, which is awesome to have in your pocket. In addition, you can get video highlights, customized widgets and a gameday pitch-by-pitch tracker. With so many games throughout the season, you want to make sure that you have access to radio broadcasts and more from your favorite team. The app costs $14.99 and is available in the Android Market. There is a Lite version of the app for free, but it doesn?t contain any radio broadcasts or gameday pitch-by-pitch counts.
ESPN Scorecenter
ESPN is the premier and trusted name in sports so it makes sense if you?re going to have an app to keep track of scoring, you would choose this one. They have done a good job with their Scorecenter app and UX. It serves a very simple function: provide scores to users for their favorite teams. You can create a list of your favorite teams from a variety of sports (including MLB), so when you open the app it will automatically show you the most recent scores from your teams? games. It also has the ESPN newsticker constantly scrolling on the bottom of the app. ESPN's Scorecenter app is available for free from the Android Market.
ScoreMobile for Android
Another scoring app, ScoreMobile for Android provides users with similar functionality that can be found in ESPN?s app. However, the preference for ScoreMobile has tended to be with their UI, particularly the widget you get with the app. It provides tabs for all major sports and thus making it very easy to click between them to find out the scores. ScoreMobile is a free app available in the Market.
The Show '11
The Show is a great app is you want to follow a team?s news, scores, players, stats and so forth. It comes with a couple of widgets that are very useful once you select a favorite team. The news widget will display the latest headlines about your club while the other will display in progress scoring updates or show the next matchup. It also provides league scoring, standings and stats in case you were wondering if this could be used instead of some of the other dedicated scoring apps. The Show '11 is available in the Android Market for $0.99.�
Sportstap
Yet another app for keeping track of scoring, Sportstap is one of my favorite scoring apps because I have found it to be incredibly fast when I am on-the-go and just want to see quick scores. You can select your favorite teams and even put a widget on your homescreen, which will display whichever one of your favorite teams is playing. It also has a nice interface that I've preferred over the others. The widget may not look as "cool" as the one found in ScoreMobile, but it does the job, which is what we ask of it.
Fantasy Guru 2011
We need to include a fantasy app in here because Fantasy Baseball is one of the most popular fantasy games out there and it?s crucial to be able to keep up with your lineup when you?re out and about. This app is for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball users only. �It allows users to edit rosters, view standings, watch video highlights and manage trades. It is available for free in the Android Market.
ESPN FLB 2011�
ESPN has just released its dedicated Fantasy Baseball app, which is great news because there has been a lot of demand for one for a while. The app comes in two forms: Free or Premium ($4.99). With the free version, you can manage rosters, such as waiver claims, benching players as well as manage trades. In addition you can have access to news relating to your players and talk on the message boards. The premium version contains all these features as well as: premium alerts to let you know who?s heading to the DL, real-time lineup adjustments right as MLB rosters are announced each day, exclusive video and news from Matthew Berry, Eric Karabell and Stephania Bell as well as other content on minor league players and breakout players.
